Animal Rights/ Veganism Displays
Table Displays at libraries are an easy, effective,
and non-confrontational way to spread our important and compassionate message
about vegetarianism and animal rights--and it is a free opportunity! People
can study your display and take information and ingest the message at their
own pace without feeling it is being forced upon them. Remember, the evidence
is on our side about vegetarianism being the right choice and our job as activists
is to make the information compelling to others and make them want to learn
more. These displays really warm up the community to vegetarianism and the animal
rights movement.
We have had six different displays over a two year period each for a month long
just at the library in Rochester, MN. The Rochester library averages 800 visitors
a day and thousands of brochures have been taken from the displays. We have
had a vegetarian display set-up at Winona Public library set up for five months.
Once you have a display you will be hooked and frantically looking for the next
opportunity! In fact, we have started contacting libraries in surrounding communities
by sending an email picture of our display. A few have already responded and
are interested. Our goal is to have displays in as many libraries as possible.
Easy Steps to take:
Contact your local library to find out their procedures
for displays.
Tell them you would like to have a display about vegetarianism or animal protection.
If they do say no, tell them "but I have heard most libraries offer this
opportunity" and see if you can convince them.
Another feature most libraries have is an information station or brochure racks
were people can stock information. For example, we have PETA's Vegetarian Starter
Kits at the library all year long for people to take.
Material Suggestions:
At a craft store you can find a three-sided standing display
board for $15, or take four bulletin boards and hinge them together--this will
cost about $50.
PETAcan
provide you with signs and literature.
Remember color, color, and more color when creating your display.
Appropriate library books related to the subject of the display can be placed
on the table for people to check-out. You will be surprised how many of theses
books are checked-out.
Contact your library today and do not let this easy and powerful opportunity
go to waste!
Other Events for Table Displays:
Local colleges and high schools: Most
high schools and colleges will let organizations set-up information table. Call
the main office of the school and they will direct your call to the appropriate
staff person. Tell them the group you are representing, local or national, and
that you would like to have an information table about vegetarianism or animal
protection. Having a student contact may help you get in the door. This is how
we originally got into the schools.
Word of Mouth: We let everyone know that we have a display and information ready
for any event or function. That alone got us a booth at a high school fundraiser.
One event came to us by putting local contact information on the back of PETA
Vegetarian Starter Kits. We had given some kits to the Family Y, and through
that they asked us to table at their Healthy Kid's Day event.
Expos or Fairs: These often cost money but the exposure is worthwhile. Expos
and fairs can bring thousands of visitors. There are pet expos,
women's expo, environmental or "green" expos--you can cater you
message to directly appeal to these groups.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions. If you have an idea for a
special sign or message, RAPS can help create it. Contact
Julie Eyrich.
